Tutoring Model That Goes beyond reading and writing

Are you considering the Tutor Doctor educational franchise? We want to take this opportunity to dive into the details of the operational model, and how Tutor Doctor works. If you think a background in education is required to succeed with Tutor Doctor, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that 85% of our franchisees have backgrounds other than education, but great organizational and networking skills are essential for success!

If you’re interested in learning more about what sets our educational franchise apart from other tutoring models, we invite you to read on to see how Tutor Doctor goes beyond reading and writing. In this article, we interview Dennis Campbell, the Global Vice President of Franchise Development, who shares his insight with readers on our hiring process, and why our franchisees are so focused on building their businesses.

Tutor Recruitment

According to Mr. Campbell, building a strong tutor roster to satisfy market demand is one of the main focuses of a Tutor Doctor franchisee. How do our franchise partners recruit gifted tutors? “We work with student placement managers at colleges and universities, school boards, and districts. End-user banner ads – we also have many very happy tutors who spend a lot of time referring people to us,” says Mr. Campbell.

When tutors are happy and they’re referring tutors to the franchisees, it speaks volumes about Tutor Doctor, and it creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust between franchise partners and tutors. It’s a win-win from every angle, especially as the franchisees build their own tutor families who lean on each other for support.

Tutor Doctor franchisees receive a lot of referrals (tutor prospects) from the tutors themselves. “They will tell their friends, neighbors, classmates, and other teachers about us,” says Mr. Campbell. This says a lot about Tutor Doctor and it makes tutor recruitment a lot easier.

At Tutor Doctor, we make it very easy for our tutors, he explains. “We give them as many families as they want. There is professional development, and we also give them local placement and long-term contracts,” he says.

Onboarding Tutors

At Tutor Doctor, we don’t expect our franchise partners to have any experience onboarding tutors, but we do have a proven system that guides franchisees through the process, explained Mr. Campbell. We have a very specific playbook that breaks it down step-by-step – from finding great tutors to onboarding them – we have the experience and expertise to translate the process to our franchise partners. “We have them covered,” he says.

Franchisees Work on the Business

Contrary to popular belief, Tutor Doctor franchise partners are not expected to teach. We do not want, or even allow our franchise partners to even consider being a tutor themselves. Why? Because, they don’t have time to tutor. They are far too busy running their tutoring businesses, says Mr. Campbell.

Mr. Campbell bought his own Tutor Doctor 11 years ago. He emphasized that he would have to issue a lot of refunds if he was acting as a tutor. “I had a tutor through high school, which is one of the reasons why I was so attracted to the model,” he says. “People who would be really good in this business may shy away from it because they think they have to be a tutor. Even if you have the ability to tutor, you’ll be far too busy on the big picture.”

Tutor Doctor Goes Beyond Homework Support

Tutor Doctor provides more than homework support – our philosophy goes far beyond that. Not only does Tutor Doctor tie into the classroom and help students with their homework, we incorporate time management, organization, focus, and teaching students how to successfully follow along with their curriculums in a proactive manner that builds self-esteem in the learning environment.

As a result, our students are truly becoming more confident because we provide the learning skills they need to flourish. Our goal is not just to catch students up who are falling behind or who have slipped through the cracks. Our goals is to get our students to the point where they follow along and absorb more on their own.

Over the past 15 years, Tutor Doctor has focused on in-person, in-home kitchen table tutoring, but that’s only the beginning. We also provide online tutoring, which is growing. We can provide students a link to various platforms that allow them to have remote access to our local tutors. Bramble for example, is one of the delivery methods we use.

It’s becoming easier and easier for our franchisees to access customers remotely and provide a very quality service. “It will never replace one-to-one tutoring, but it will absolutely compliment it,” says Mr. Campbell.

For example, a customer will say they need help for two hours that night. They will be online with one of our local tutors, and the customer will have such a great experience that not only do they come back for a traditional enrollment, they’ll tell people in the community about Tutor Doctor. “It’s another way for us to support the community,” says Mr. Campbell.
